Rome, Sep 28 (EFE).- The leader of the Brothers of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, set to form the government after her victory in the recent elections, has assured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of “loyal support” in the war in his country.
“Dear @ZelenskyyUa, you know that you can count on our loyal support for the cause of freedom of Ukrainian people. Stay strong and keep your faith steadfast!” Meloni said in response to a message from the Ukrainian leader congratulating her on her resounding victory in Sunday’s elections.
Zelenskyy, in his message, had also thanked Italy’s continuous support for Ukraine against Russian aggression, and hoped for a fruitful collaboration with the new government.
Meloni has always pledged her support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression, as well as the sanctions adopted by the European Union against Russia.
But League leader Matteo Salvini, a partner in the right-wing coalition that won the election, has been vocal in the past in his praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Recently, he also recently criticized the sanctions on Russia, describing them as “useless,” and that they affected only Italians with serious consequences such as increasing energy prices. EFE
