Turkey’s president Erdogan tests positive for Covid-19

Ankara, Feb 5 (EFE).- Turkey’s president Tayyip Erdogan announced on Saturday that he and his wife had tested positive for coronavirus and that they were experiencing mild symptoms.

“Today, the result of our Covid-19 test, which I did with my wife after experiencing mild symptoms, was positive. Thankfully, we have a mild illness, and it is the Omicron variant,” Erdogan said in a tweet.

“We will continue to work from home. We are waiting for your prayers,” he added.

Erdogan, who turns 68 years old this month, returned to Turkey on Friday after a visit to Kiev where he met with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and offered himself in the role of mediator between Ukraine and Russia.

On Saturday, Erdogan remotely participated in the opening ceremony for a road in the Black Sea region while seeming in good health.

Turkey has been hitting all-time high daily infections in recent days, an increase driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant.

On Friday, authorities reported 110,000 new infections and 248 deaths due to Covid-19.

The Eurasian country of 83 million people has recorded more than 88,500 coronavirus deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Some 62.2 % of the Turkish population has received the full course of the Covid-19 vaccine. EFE
