Poll shows virtual tie 2 weeks out from South Korean presidential election

Seoul, Feb 21 (EFE).- A poll published Monday shows a virtual tie between the two main South Korean presidential candidates with just over two weeks to go before the national election.

The ruling liberal Democratic Party’s Lee Jae-myung topped the Korea Society Opinion Institute (KSOI) poll with 43.7 percent, while 42.2 percent went to the other main candidate Yoon Suk-yeol of the conservative People Power Party.

The survey, carried out this past weekend among 1,002 South Koreans of voting age, shows a margin of error of 3.1 percentage points, which illustrates how tight the Mar. 9 presidential election could be.

It also provided a boost for liberal Lee Jae-myung, who has been trailing Yoon in recent polls.

In fact, in four surveys released on Sunday, Yoon led with between 4.2 and 9.1 percentage points.

In third place in the KSOI poll published Monday, and with just 5.8 percent, was the centrist Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party, with whom the conservative Yoon has just rejected the possibility of forming a coalition.

In fourth place, with 2.7 percent support, was the progressive Sim Sang-jeung of the Justice Party.

The election will serve to elect the president of South Korea for the next five years. EFE
