Meloni says government has ‘five-year horizon’ in power
Rome, Dec 29 (EFE).- Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni on Thursday highlighted the “positive climate” within the ruling right-wing coalition she helms, saying it remains united with “a five-year horizon” in power.
Meloni was speaking during her first end-of-year press conference, which lasted over three hours and saw her touch on issues like the war in Ukraine, the repression of protests in Iran, Italy’s post-pandemic recovery and the corruption scandal engulfing the European Parliament.
She also said that the birth rate remains “an absolute priority” for her government, which has earmarked 1.5 billion euros in its budget.
Italy’s first female prime minister said she “trusts her allies” in the coalition government, the leaders of the far-right League, Matteo Salvini, and the conservative Forza Italia, Silvio Berlusconi, insisting that they share a “common vision” despite the different “nuances”.
“We all have a 5-year horizon” because “Italy has paid dearly for its political instability,” Meloni said.
She also urged a harmonized, EU-wide response to surging Covid numbers in China, after Italy announced Wednesday that arrivals from China would need a negative test to enter the country. EFE
