Raids on pro-Iranian militia in Syria kill at least 15: Monitor
Beirut, Nov 9 (EFE).- At least 15 people were killed in overnight strikes on a convoy of pro-Iran militia in eastern Syria, a war monitor said on Wednesday.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human rights said it was “unknown” who carried out the strike on “trucks carrying weapons and oil tankers belonging to the Iranian militias” in the Deir Ez-Zor region on the border between Syria and Iraq.
The dead were mostly the militias affiliated with Iran, said the monitor.
Unidentified militants also bombed a military camp near the area, said the observatory.
The monitor warned that the toll might rise because some wounded were critical.
A network of local activists, DeiralZur24, confirmed on Twitter that there were three air raids in the province last night.
The Euphrates River roughly divides the Deir Ez-Zor province into two parts: one controlled by troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, supported by Iran, and the other with the US-allied Syrian Kurdish forces.
The Iranian-backed militias are often the target of Israeli attacks and, less frequently, of raids by US forces in the region.
The US forces, who lead a coalition fighting against Islamic State militants in Syria and Iraq, bombed Iranian-backed militias in August this year.
The sides later engaged in attacks and counterattacks over the next few days. EFE
