Rescue operations underway in India to save girl trapped in a borewell for almost 2 days

New Delhi, Jun 8 (EFE).- Rescue teams on Thursday were exploring new approaches to save a two-year-old girl named Srishti, who fell into a 100-meter (328 feet) deep borewell in central India over 45 hours ago.

“One robotics team which has successfully evacuated children before has reached the site,” Ashish Tiwari, chief executive director of Sehore district in Madhya Pradesh, where the operation is being carried out, told EFE.

“Because of the hard rock we are not able to dig much, we are going through the main hole,” he added.

The official said that the teams were continuing to look for signs that the toddler is alive after she slid down to a depth of 30 meters (around 100 feet) due to vibrations caused by the excavating and drilling machines.

She was initially trapped at a depth of about 12 meters (40 feet).

Srishti fell into the borewell around 1 pm on Tuesday while playing.

Soon after, the local residents alerted the authorities.

Teams from the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are conducting the rescue operation along with the army, which joined in on Wednesday evening at Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh’s request.

Images released by Indian news agency PTI on Thursday show the arrival of the vehicle carrying the robot that will take part in the rescue operations as well as half a dozen machines digging a large but shallow hole.

A similar incident occurred in India a year ago, when a 10-year-old boy fell into a borewell in the north of the country and was rescued after an operation that lasted more than 100 hours.

In another incident, a two-year-old boy died at the end of October 2019 in the south of the country after falling into a 30-meter deep borewell. EFE
