Japan registered $ 3 billion trade deficit in January

Tokyo, Feb 25 (efe-epa).- Japan registered a 325,375 million yen ($3 billion) trade deficit in January, the first negative balance in seven months and 75.3 percent less than in the same month of 2020, the government said Thursday.

The negative balance contrasts the surplus registered in December, of 751,005 million yen, according to data published by the Finance Ministry.

Japanese exports advanced 6.4 percent year-on-year in the first month of the year to reach 5.77 trillion yen.

Imports fell 9.5 percent compared to January 2020, to 6.1 trillion yen (47,303 million euros).

By countries, Japan registered with China, its largest trading partner, a deficit of 486,993 million yen, 42 percent less than a year earlier.

With the world’s leading economy and its second trading partner, the United States, the country had a surplus of 415,225 million yen, 12.2 percent more year-on-year.

With the European Union, its third-largest trading partner, Japan registered a deficit of 157 trillion yen, 5.6 percent less than the one recorded a year earlier. EFE-EPA
