The Delta Variant of COVID-19 Arrives in Memphis; Experts Say It Is Deadlier and More Contagious

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — The Delta variant of COVID-19 is already in Memphis, the Shelby County Health Department stated on Tuesday, June 15. So far, 10 new cases with this variant that comes from India have been confirmed, although there are also 14 other probable cases.
The cases reported with the Delta variant since June 9, 2021, have no history of travel outside the United States, but they are related to some cases of people who have traveled to other parts of the country.
Health experts estimate that the Delta variant (B.1.617.2) is 50% easier to transmit from person to person than the Alpha variant (B.1.1.7), which is currently the dominant virus in Shelby County. It is also very important to note that this new variant is deadlier than the others.
Moreover, the number of confirmed cases of the Delta variant is expected to increase as time passes, and very rapidly, which is why the Shelby County Health Department recommends that those residents who have not yet been vaccinated against COVID-19 do so as soon as possible, as this vaccine can provide protection of up to 88%.
“The Delta variant is the most infectious and most easily transmitted version of COVID-19 yet discovered. The fact that we have detected it here in Shelby County serves to remind us all that the COVID-19 pandemic has not ended. If you are eligible to be vaccinated, but have not received a vaccine, please do so as soon as possible. COVID-19 vaccines are available at no cost to you and vaccination offers the best protection against the Delta variant and the other variants circulating in the community,” said Dr. Bruce Randolph, Health Officer at Shelby County Health Department.

COVID-19 STATISTICS IN MEMPHIS AND SHELBY COUNTY
As of Thursday, June 17, 99,466 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Shelby County since the pandemic started – this is counting the 78 new cases that were recently reported –, and 1,682 deaths related to COVID-19 have been reported in total.
Also as of Thursday, 377,626 Shelby County residents have been vaccinated.
HOW TO SLOW THE SPREAD OF COVID-19
1.- Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
2.- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
3.- Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
4.- Stay home if you are sick.
5.- Stay away from people who are sick.
6.- Wear a mask in public places unless you have already received both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. (Wearing the mask, while no longer required in Shelby County, is still highly recommended.)

Hasta el momento, se ha confirmado la cifra de 10 casos nuevos con esta variante que proviene de la India, aunque también existen otros 14 casos probables.
Los casos notificados con la variante delta desde el 9 de junio del 2021 no tienen antecedentes de viajes fuera de los Estados Unidos, pero sí están relacionados con algunos casos de gente que ha viajado a otros lugares del país.
Los expertos en salud estiman que la variante delta (B.1.617.2) es un 50% más fácil de transmitir de persona a persona que la variante Alpha (B.1.1.7), que actualmente es el virus dominante en el condado de Shelby. También es muy importante destacar que esta nueva variante es mucho más letal que las demás.
Por otro lado, se espera que el número de casos confirmados de la variante delta aumente a medida que pase el tiempo, y con mucha rapidez, por lo que el Departamento de Salud del Condado de Shelby recomienda que aquellos residentes que aún no se han vacunado contra el COVID-19 lo hagan tan pronto sea posible, ya que dicha vacuna puede brindar una protección de hasta un 88%.
“La variante delta es la versión más contagiosa del COVID-19 hasta ahora. El hecho de que la hayamos detectado aquí, en el condado de Shelby, sirve para recordarnos a todos que la pandemia del COVID-19 no ha terminado. ESTADÍSTICAS DEL COVID-19 EN MEMPHIS Y EL CONDADO DE SHELBY

CÓMO PREVENIR LA PROPAGACIÓN DEL COVID-19
Los CDC, al igual que los Departamentos de Salud de Tennessee y del Condado de Shelby, han estado recomendado desde un principio seguir las siguientes indicaciones, y al pie de la letra:
1.- Lavarse las manos con frecuencia con agua y jabón. Usar desinfectante para manos a base de alcohol, si no hay agua y jabón disponibles.
2.- Cubrirse la boca y nariz con un pañuelo desechable al toser o estornudar.
3.- No tocarse los ojos, la nariz o la boca con las manos sin lavar.
4.- Quedarse en casa si uno está enfermo.
5.- Mantenerse alejado de las personas enfermas.
6.- Usar la mascarilla en lugares públicos y espacios cerrados, a menos que uno ya haya recibido ambas dosis de la vacuna contra el COVID-19. (El uso de la mascarilla, aunque ya no es obligatorio en el condado de Shelby, sigue siendo altamente recomendable).
