OECD urges Malta to undertake overhaul after Caruana Galizia murder

Vienna, Aug 2 (EFE).- The OECD has asked the Maltese government to adopt all the recommendations issued by an independent investigation on the murder of the journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in 2017, to improve the safety of media professionals in the island nation.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said in a statement that the investigation was carried out by an independent committee and reminded that the report, published on July 29, found the Maltese authorities to bear responsibility for her death.

The conclusions clearly stated that the murder of Caruana Galizia was intrinsecally linked to her work as an investigative journalist.

Caruana Galizia was killed in 2017 by a bomb detonated in her car, which caused public outrage and resulted in the resignation in 2020 of then Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

The independent investigation found the Muscat administration to be responsible for Caruana Galizia’s murder for its inaction and neglect. EFE
