Venezuelan artist unveils worlds largest mural made of plastic bottle caps

Caracas, Dec 10 (EFE).- Venezuelan artist Oscar Olivares on Saturday unveiled what they claimed to be the world’s largest mural made of recycled plastic, made of over 400,000 plastic bottle caps, in Guatire, on the outskirts of Caracas.

In a festive atmosphere, the artist finally inaugurated the artwork along with local authorities after spending over two months and using nearly a ton of plastic waste to build it along with dozens of volunteers.

Olivares, a 26-year-old Caracas resident, told EFE that the mural “converts the entire region in an example of art, recycling and teamwork to be followed,” as more than 1,000 people had participated in the initiative, especially the local communities that donated the caps.

The artist was happy that his work, also displayed in other cities in Venezuela where he has created smaller installations, is having an impact both overseas and within the country, where it has helped spread environmental awareness.

Olivares said that when he accepted this proposal, it was aimed at transforming Venezuela into “an example to be followed,” and “the protagonist of this ecological art movement at the world level.” He believes that the objectives had been achieved.

Nearly 1,000 people attended the unveiling of the artwork, which could be in contention for a Guinness world record according to the organizers, although they did not offer details in this regard. EFE
