‘Information Indicates’ MPD Officer Joseph McKinney Was Killed by Friendly Fire, DA’s Office Confirms

MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — The Shelby County District Attorney’s Office says that “information indicates” that Memphis Police Officer Joseph McKinney was killed by friendly fire rather than the two teenage suspects who reportedly fired at officers early Friday morning.
A statement released Wednesday evening also says that despite this information, prosecutors believe the surviving teenager’s actions are the real cause of McKinney’s death.
“Although current information indicates friendly fire, we believe the 17-year-old’s reprehensible actions are still the real cause of Officer McKinney’s death. Should a legal avenue open up for additional prosecution, be assured we will pursue it.”

After the news, the Memphis Police Department mirrored the sentiment in a statement posted to X, saying that it was the “violent encounter” officers responded to Friday morning that resulted in the 26-year-old officer’s slaying.
The Memphis Police Association also released a statement stressing that the city must focus on the cause of the tragedy, which was the decisions made by the suspects.
“While the MPA, the department and this city continue to grieve the loss of Ofc. Joseph McKinney, we must focus on the cause of this tragic incident. Ofc. McKinney made the ultimate sacrifice to protect the citizens of this city from two individuals that chose to become violent when encountering police. It was a result of the suspects’ decisions to become violent that led to the exchange of gunfire which led to the tragic loss of life. We will continue to focus on Ofc. McKinney’s valor in the face of danger and the sacrifice he made for the citizens of this city.”

Neither MPD nor the MPA acknowledged friendly fire in their statements.
Officer McKinney was slain early Friday morning during a shootout with two teenagers at the intersection of Horn Lake Road and Charter Road in Whitehaven.
It all began when police received multiple calls about a suspicious car in the area around 2 a.m. The car was determined to be stolen.
When officers approached the vehicle, gunfire erupted. Five people in total were struck, including both teenage suspects and three police officers.
Both McKinney and 18-year-old suspect Jaylen Lobley were killed.
At last check, the surviving 17-year-old suspect and the other two officers, who have not been identified, are still recovering.
It was also announced on Wednesday that the Shelby County DA’s Office will be filing a motion to transfer the surviving suspect to adult court.
The teen’s charges include criminal attempt first-degree murder, assault against first responder, and aggravated assault. Additional charges include theft of property, possessing a firearm, attempting to commit a dangerous felony, and evading arrest.
Altogether, these charges carry a potential maximum sentence of 400 years.
The DA’s Office explained that the surviving suspect is not currently facing a murder charge because of the indication of friendly fire.
Our office recently released a statement with our intent to file a motion to transfer the 17-year-old involved in the officer-involved shooting to adult court. Within the statement, we detailed the charges against him. Since then, some questions have arisen regarding the absence of a murder charge.
We have not proceeded with a murder charge at this time because current information indicates that Officer McKinney was killed by friendly fire.
Although current information indicates friendly fire, we believe the 17-year-old’s reprehensible actions are still the real cause of Officer McKinney’s death. Should a legal avenue open up for additional prosecution, be assured we will pursue it.

El oficial McKinney fue asesinado el viernes por la mañana temprano durante un tiroteo con dos adolescentes en la intersección de Horn Lake Road y Charter Road en Whitehaven.
