Suu Kyi’s hearing postponed over health issues
Bangkok, Sep 13 (EFE).- A Myanmar court on Monday postponed the first hearing in two months in the trial of ousted state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi as the leader was indisposed to attend it due to ill health, her lawyers told EFE.
“At 9.30 am the lawyers met Aung San Suu Kyi. She appeared ill, was sneezing and said she felt dizzy,” one of the lawyers said in a message.
Local media outlets reported that 76-year-old Suu Kyi said she was feeling dizzy due to her road journey to the court in capital Naypyidaw.
The leader had been arrested on Feb. 1 by the military when it seized power in a coup, ending a decade of the gradual transition to democracy that the country had witnessed.
Suu Kyi is facing a number of charges, and is being tried by a special court in the capital in five of them, including inciting violence, violating Covid-19 norms and illegally importing walkie-talkies.
The trial iss set to be completed before the end of the year, but has been delayed repeatedly due to a Covid-19 surge in the country.
During the last hearing held on Jul. 13, the legal representatives of the former state counsellor said that authorities were planning to bring more charges against her over alleged corruption, in a court in the central city of Mandalay.
Suu Kyi has been kept in custody at an undisclosed location and has remained practically cut off from developments in Myanmar, which has descended into sociopolitical chaos due to the military coup.
She has also been accused of violating the Official Secrets Act – which carries prison sentences of 14 years – in a court in Yangon.
The Myanmar Army justifies the coup citing alleged electoral fraud in November’s elections, in which Suu Kyi’s party won a landslide victory – as it did in 2015 – and which were considered free and fair by international observers.
