Jordan bans publishing information on case involving ex-crown prince

Amman, Apr 6 (EFE).- Jordan’s top prosecutor on Tuesday banned the publication of all information relating to former crown prince Hamzah bin Hussein.

Barakat al-Zoyoud said in a statement the ban aiming to preserve the secrecy of investigation carried out by the security services would be in place until further notice, according to the official Petra news agency.

It “includes ban on audiovisual media and social networking sites, and on the publication and circulation of any pictures or video clips related to the incident under the penalty of criminal liability,” said the statement.

Prince Hamzah was reportedly placed under house arrest on Saturday as between 16 and 18 people were arrested including a royal family member and a former advisor to the king, over conspiracy allegations, which the king’s half-brother denied.

However, he has vowed to comply with the guidelines of the ruling Hashemite family late on Monday.

“I place myself in the hands of his majesty the king… I will remain committed to the constitution of the dear Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” Prince Hamzah said in a letter he signed issued by the royal palace.

Prince Hamzah is the eldest son of King Hussein and Queen Noor, whom the monarch married in 1978 after having been divorced twice and widowed once.

When Hussein died in February 1999, Hamzah was named crown prince, but that decision was revoked in November 2004, when he was replaced in that role by Hussein bin Abdullah.

After the wave of arrests, several Middle Eastern countries – as well as the United States and the European Union – expressed their support for King Abdullah, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt, among others.EFE
