En Memphis, una ciudad famosa por su escena musical, siempre puedes encontrar un show increíble. La hermosura de Memphis es que no todas las veces tienes que pagar tanto dinero para escuchar buena música. Siempre hay un show en un café, un concierto en la comunidad, o una noche de micrófono abierto para disfrutar; y muchas veces es gratis.
La semana pasada, Mark Allen, un guitarrista local, tocó en el café Java Cabana. Tocando música flamenca, Allen verdaderamente hizo que su guitarra cantara como los grandes. Una y otra vez, el artista se mostró inagotable con su repertorio de canciones de flamenco y sus conocimientos técnicos de la guitarra.
La atmósfera de Java Cabana no sólo es muy casual, sino también amable. En un momento, Allen empezó una conversación con un grupo que nunca había escuchado a un guitarrista flamenco. Mostró cómo el flamenco crea estrofas con unas figuras de guitarra intricadas, llamadas falsetas. Construyó una melodía simple y explicó cómo los músicos flamencos van sumando y embelleciendo la melodía. Allen no sólo ama su oficio, sino que también tiene un talento para presentarse y para enseñar.
Java Cabana y otros cafés, restaurantes y salas de conciertos ofrecen muchas veces conciertos que son fenomenales, y de los cuales muchos son gratis. Cuando voy a un concierto, siempre son memorables. Memphis es una verdadera meca musical.

In Memphis, a town renowned for music, you can always catch an amazing show. The beauty of Memphis is that you don’t have to shell out to hear great music. There’s always a coffee house show, community concert, or open mic to enjoy, and often free.
Last week, Mark Allen, a local classical guitarist, played at Java Cabana coffeehouse. Playing flamenco, Allen truly made his guitar sing like the masters. Song after song, Allen never exhausted both his repertoire of flamenco and his technical knowledge of the guitar.
The atmosphere at Java Cabana is not only casual, but very friendly. Allen at one point started a conversation with a group that had never heard a flamenco guitarist. He showed how flamenco builds verses with intricate guitar runs, which are known as falsetas. He built a simple melody, then explained how flamenco musicians structure and add onto the melody. Allen not only has a love for his craft but also a talent for performing—and teaching.
Java Cabana and other coffee shops, restaurants, and concert halls often hold amazing concerts, many of them free. When I attend a concert or performance, they’re always memorable. Memphis truly is a mecca of musical talent.
