Early results in Poland election show incumbent party has large lead

Krakow, Poland, Oct 16 (EFE).- The first official data of elections in Poland, with just over 15 percent counted, grant on Monday 41.1 percent of the votes to the ultra-conservative Law and Justice party, a lead much greater than exit polls showed over the weekend.

In second place, the Civic Platform of liberal opposition leader Donald Tusk collected 25.4 percent of the votes, while the center Third Way coalition had 13.8 percent of the support.

The left and the Confederation ultranationalists are currently assigned 8 percent and 7.5 percent of votes, respectively.

These results differ significantly from the exit poll released at the close of election day, which unleashed euphoria among the opposition at the possibility of forming a multiparty alliance to oust Law and Justice, which has governed since 2015, from power.

The final results will not be known until Monday night or Tuesday morning, and ballots of hundreds of thousands of expatriated Poles will take longer to be counted.

On the other hand, the Electoral Commission usually has earlier access to the results sent from the big cities, where the opposition traditionally has more support, and the votes from rural areas, where the Government has its main fiefdom, will be counted late in the afternoon. EFE
