MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — Once again, the city of Memphis is preparing to host hundreds of thousands of visitors who come every year from all over the world just for Memphis in May, an international festival that is known for being one of the best of its kind worldwide. Featuring arts, music, culture and gastronomy, Memphis in May seeks to promote and celebrate the cultural heritage of Memphis, while fostering the local economic growth and raising international awareness through education at the same time.
By the same token, Memphis in May is distinguished by its tradition of honoring a different country each year, giving Malaysia a chance this time.
Malaysia is in Southeast Asia and consists of two geographical regions separated by the South China Sea. Peninsular Malaysia, or West Malaysia, borders Thailand and Singapore. Malaysian Borneo, or East Malaysia, is in the northern part of the island of Borneo, which is the third largest island in the world. The combined land area is somewhat larger than New Mexico. The country’s famous wildlife includes tigers, leopards, the Malayan tapir, and endangered Borneo pygmy elephants and orangutans.
Malaysia gained its independence as Malaya from the British Empire on August 31, 1957. In the years after, Malaya evolved democratically and formed Malaysia of 13 states on September 16, 1963. Malaysia is one of the wealthiest countries in the region, generating a GDP of $902.6 billion, and boasts a fully industrialized economy with primary exports including electronics, chemicals, semiconductor chips, natural rubber, palm oil, and petroleum. Tennessee received $1.85 billion in imports from Malaysia and exported $147 million in products to the country in 2021.
“Malaysia is a culturally rich nation with a cosmopolitan capital city that serves as headquarters for a prosperous economy,” said Leigh Shockey, 2023 Memphis in May Board Chairwoman. “We are excited to share the stories and exotic culture of this important country with Memphis and discover how Malaysia is known as ‘truly Asia.’”
Malaysia is a country of many cultures, religions, and ethnic backgrounds. The country’s population is approximately 33 million, and the official language is Malay, but residents also speak English, Tamil, and Cantonese. Islam is Malaysia’s official religion, with about 60% of the population identifying as Muslim.
In addition to celebrating Malaysia as such, including its culture and music, during the month of May, there will be other events that are equally iconic: the Beale Street Music Festival, the World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, and the Great American River Run.
The 45th (Forty-fifth) edition of the Beale Street Music Festival (BSMF) will feature a wide variety of genres, as always: rock, alternative, R&B, hip hop, indie, pop, folk, and blues.
Among the most popular headliners are The Lumineers, Greta Van Fleet, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss, Earth Wind & Fire, HARDY, Jazmine Sullivan, The Roots, AJR, and 311.
This year’s lineup for the iconic festival also includes GloRilla, Gary Clark Jr., Ziggy Marley, Young the Giant, Live, PJ Morton, The Struts, Gov’t Mule, mike., Andy Grammer, Yola, Dru Hill, Toadies, Lucinda Williams, Living Colour, Cameo, White Reaper, Shovels & Rope, Marcy Playground, Phony Ppl, Low Cut Connie, Beach Weather, Myron Elkins, Mac Saturn and more.
The artists and bands that will be representing Memphis’ talent are Finesse2Tymes, Big Boogie, The Bar-Kays, Jason D. Williams, Dirty Streets, Tyke T, Sleep Theory, The Sensational Barnes Brothers, and Mille Manny.
But that’s not all, as the BSMF will have its popular “Blues Tent” in Handy Park (on Beale Street) this time. The artists that will be performing in what is now called the “Blues Stage on Beale” are the following: Los Lobos, Keb Mo, North Mississippi Allstars, Ana Popavic, Bernard Allison, Colin James, Cedric Burnside, Selwyn Birchwood, Blind Mississippi Morris, Ghost Town Blues Band, Mr. Sipp, Reba Russell Band, Will Tucker, Rodd Bland Members Only Band, Mark Muleman Massey, and Ollie Moore. These concerts at the new “Blues Stage on Beale” will be completely free of charge.
“This year’s lineup reflects the broad musical tastes of our festival goers with a diverse lineup of some of today’s hottest artists as well past festival favorites and stars of tomorrow” said James L. Holt, Memphis in May’s President & CEO. “At the Beale Street Music Festival, we endeavor to offer something for almost every musical taste, and we have a few more surprise additions to come.”
Regarding tickets, including the $205 3-Day passes as well as the VIP passes, music fans are encouraged to buy theirs early, as quantities are limited and prices will increase as supply runs out. VIP passes, which offer exclusive seating on raised, covered platforms with unobstructed views of each stage, VIP-only bars with beer, food, wine, and convenient VIP-only airconditioned restrooms, start at $995.

“Music just sounds better in Memphis, and there’s nothing like experiencing the Beale Street Music Festival in its home in Tom Lee Park next to the Mississippi River with the Memphis skyline and lighted bridges as the backdrop,” Shockey stated. “We are so pleased to return the festival to its long-term home downtown on the riverfront at the foot of historic Beale Street.”
The World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, meanwhile, will be from May 17 to May 20, and is also one of the most important BBQ contests in the world. Here, thousands of people enjoy a delicious pork barbecue while hundreds of teams compete for the best BBQ trophy.
Last but not least, the Great American River Run will also come back this year, more specifically on May 27. It consists of a half marathon, a 5K race, and a 10K race. Registration costs $35, $40 or $65 per person, depending on the marathon you want to run.

De la misma manera, este magno evento de Memphis in May se distingue por su tradición de honrar a un país diferente cada año, dándole el turno esta vez a Malasia.
Malasia se encuentra en el sudeste de Asia y consta de dos regiones geográficas separadas por el Mar de la China Meridional. Malasia peninsular, o Malasia occidental, limita con Tailandia y Singapur. El Borneo malasio, o Malasia Oriental, se encuentra en la parte norte de la isla de Borneo, que es la tercera isla más grande del mundo. El área terrestre combinada es algo más grande que Nuevo México. Para cerrar el Memphis in May del 2023, se realizará el 27 de mayo el “Great American River Run”, el cual consta de un medio maratón, una carrera de 5 kilómetros y otra de 10 kilómetros. Las inscripciones cuestan $35, $40 o $65 por persona, dependiendo del maratón que se desea correr.
