City strengthens grip over Premier League lead with 4-1 win over Liverpool

Liverpool, England, Feb 7 (efe-epa).- Manchester City on Sunday earned a second-half away 4-1 win over defending champion Liverpool, to strengthen their grip over the Premier League’s top spot.

City had an opportunity to break the deadlock with eight minutes to go before first-half stoppage time, when they were awarded a penalty after English forward Raheem Sterling was fouled in the area.

German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan, however, overshot the penalty kick, sending the ball over the crossbar, and the goalless stalemate reigned when the first-half whistle sounded.

The 30-year-old redeemed himself, however, four minutes into the second half, when he took advantage of a ball deflected off Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, who had stopped an effort by Phil Foden.

Shortly after the one-hour mark, Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah earned a penalty kick and delivered from the spot to bring Liverpool level in the 63rd minute.

This was the international forward’s 16th 2020-2021 Premier League goal, cementing his status as the league’s top scorer.

Liverpool’s relief, however, was short-lived as the defending champs conceded three goals within 10 minutes.

It was Alisson, Liverpool’s goalkeeper, who began the play that Gundogan successfully culminated in the 73rd minute for Manchester City’s second goal.

The Brazilian goalie first crumbled under the pressure of a City player on the edge of the area, but a teammate sprang to Alisson’s rescue to clear the ball.

But the Brazilian was punished on the second occasion on the same play, when he got the ball back only to pass it by mistake to Foden, who penetrated the area and sent a low cross that Alisson failed to stop whereupon Gundogan did not hesitate.
