Juventus sack Pirlo after 1 season in charge

Rome, May 28 (EFE).- Andrea Pirlo has been dismissed as coach of Italian Serie A side Juventus, the club confirmed on Friday.

In a statement, Juventus thanked him for the two trophies he won in the single season he was in charge.

“Thank you Andrea Pirlo,” Juventus posted on its website to announce the Italian coach’s departure after a year at the helm of the first team, with whom he won the Coppa Italia, the Italian Super Cup and finished fourth in Serie A.

“For all this, for the courage, the dedication, the passion with which he demonstrated every day, our thanks go to the Maestro, the Coach and to Andrea, that really comes from the heart. As well as our good luck for the future that will surely be a wonderful one,” the club said.

Pirlo, a former Juventus player and world champion with the Italian national team, was chosen to replace Maurizio Sarri last August despite having no previous experience as a first team coach.

His team did not shine as expected, was eliminated in the round of 16 of the Champions League and only managed to qualify for next season’s competition on the last matchday.

“My first season as a coach came to an end. It was an intense, complicated, year, but in any case wonderful. When Juventus called me I never thought about the risks involved, even though they were obvious,” Pirlo wrote on Instagram.

His replacement will most likely be, according to Italian media, Massimiliano Allegri, who managed the team from 2014 to 2019, winning five league titles. EFE
