MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 13) — After a third consecutive night of protests in Minneapolis and in several other major U.S. cities, authorities took former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin into custody Friday afternoon in connection to the death this week of George Floyd.
Floyd, 46, died Monday after he was detained for questioning regarding a possible forgery in progress. Video of his death caught by bystanders showed a Minneapolis police officer identified as Chauvin holding his knee to Floyd’s neck for more than five minutes as Floyd pleaded for air, sparking outrage.
John Harrington, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said Friday that he’s received word that Officer Derek Chauvin has been taken into custody, according to multiple reports.
The newspaper reported the other three officers involved in Floyd’s death had not been charged as of early Friday afternoon.
