On Your Feet!: Exclusive Interview with the Protagonists of the Musical about Emilio and Gloria Estefan

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — ¿Están listos para bailar? Pues, pónganse de pie porque en unos días estará en la ciudad el tan esperado musical de Emilio y Gloria Estefan: “On Your Feet!”.

Bajo la dirección del dos veces ganador del Tony Award®, Jerry Mitchell (“Kinky Boots”), con una coreografía del cuatro veces nominado a los premios Drama Desk, Sergio Trujillo (“Jersey Boys”), y con un libreto original del ganador de un Academy Award®, Alexander Dinelaris (“Birdman”), el musical de “On Your Feet!” se distingue por ser una de las historias más inspiradoras de nuestros tiempos. Cuenta la historia de Emilio y Gloria Estefan, quienes, desde sus humildes comienzos en Cuba, llegaron a los Estados Unidos y rompieron todas las barreras para convertirse en una sensación internacional en el mundo de la música pop. Por si fuera poco, fue gracias a estos dos grandes artistas que otros cantantes de la música latina han podido hacer su crossover y adquirir fama en el mercado anglosajón.

Según el equipo creativo de esta gran producción, “‘On Your Feet!’ es todo lo auténtico que puede ser un musical de Broadway. El elenco es latino. Hablan español e inglés. Los integrantes originales de Miami Sound Machine son parte de la orquesta (cinco de ellos). La coreografía cuenta con verdaderos bailarines cubanos, no sólo de salsa y conga, sino también en el baile de la chancleta y el pañuelo”.

“Cuando me presentaba en el salón donde Sergio y los bailarines ensayaban, no era como que él tenía que enseñarles a bailar salsa, o enseñarles los ritmos”, dijo Mitchell. “Ya sabían el lenguaje. Era el vocabulario con el que habían crecido”, agregó.

Por el lado de los artistas principales del elenco, Christie Prades (Gloria) y Eddie Noel (Emilio), “On Your Feet!” fue la plataforma que les ayudó a consolidar sus carreras como actores en Broadway. Para ambos es un orgullo poder interpretar tanto a Gloria como a Emilio Estefan.

“Este musical es al final de cuentas la historia de muchísimas familias cubanas, la mía incluida, que escaparon a Miami en busca de libertad y el sueño americano”, indicó Prades.

Para Prades, Gloria fue un “modelo a seguir” cuando ella era niña. “Mi mamá tiene todos sus discos y los ponía todo el tiempo. Y me decía, ‘Gloria es igual que nosotros’. Gloria era la prueba de que se podía lograr cualquier cosa”.

La joven actriz de Miami hizo la audición para “On Your Feet!” cuando el show llevaba seis meses en Broadway. Inicialmente, participó como suplente en varios papeles pequeños y para cubrir a Ana Villafañe, quien fue la primera en hacer el papel de Gloria. El 6 de febrero del 2018, Prades apareció en algunos números de “On Your Feet!” en el Arsht Center. Al concluir, Gloria Estefan subió al escenario y le preguntó si a ella le gustaría encabezar la gira nacional.

“Me quedé totalmente estupefacta”, dijo Prades. “Me parecía irreal. No fue hasta que dejé la producción de Broadway y regresé a Miami que tuve la oportunidad de sentarme y asimilar lo que había pasado. Les estoy eternamente agradecida a Gloria y Emilio por darme esta experiencia. Me alegra tanto compartir la historia de ellos por todo el país, y me quedo corta cuando digo que me siento profundamente honrada de representar a esta increíble mujer”.

Eddie Noel, por su parte, dijo en una entrevista exclusiva con La Prensa Latina que se siente muy honrado de interpretar el papel de Emilio Estefan. “Para mí es el honor más grande del mundo. (Emilio) es un hombre súper humilde, con los pies bien puestos sobre la Tierra. Te saluda siempre con un beso y un abrazo, es bien cálido, es como un familiar más, como un tío; es más, yo le digo ‘tío Emilio’”, expresó el actor puertorriqueño, quien desde un principio (en abril del 2017) audicionó para dicho rol, pero no fue sino hasta hace apenas dos semanas que recibió la noticia del propio Emilio Estefan de que iba a cerrar la actual gira como uno de los protagonistas del musical.

Noel comenzó a formar parte del elenco de “On Your Feet!” a principios del año pasado, con cinco personajes diferentes y más de 17 cambios de vestuario. Luego de unos seis o siete meses, se le dio el papel del padre de Gloria Estefan.

En cuanto al musical en sí, Noel explica que la audiencia va a poder conocer más la parte personal, así como la profesional, de ambos artistas cubanoamericanos. El musical presenta la historia de Emilio y Gloria Estefan, incluyendo su infancia y sus conciertos, hasta los AMAs (American Music Awards) del año 1991, cuando Gloria sale nuevamente a la luz pública después del terrible accidente que tuvo.

Para Noel, hay dos números del show que son sus favoritos. Se trata del número en donde Gloria Fajardo (Nancy Ticotin), la mamá de Gloria Estefan, canta “Mi Tierra”, una canción que se remonta en la década de los cincuenta en Cuba. El otro número es el de “Wrapped”, en donde Gloria, mientras es operada, sueña con su papá, su abuela y otros familiares que están muertos. “Es un número que te va a tocar, porque lo bueno de este show es que no solamente es para la comunidad latina, sino que apela a todo el mundo porque habla sobre la familia, y todos tenemos familia”.

En conclusión, es un musical para todas las generaciones, razas y culturas, ya que habla de la familia, del amor, de la igualdad de oportunidades, del sueño americano y de la superación personal.

“Todos somos inmigrantes y todos somos parte de este maravilloso país, compuesto de gente de todos colores y razas. Eso es ‘On Your Feet!’”, manifestó Sergio Trujillo.

“On Your Feet!” estará presentándose en el Teatro Orpheum de Memphis del 12 al 17 de febrero del 2019. Las entradas cuestan entre $25 y $125 y están a la venta en www.orpheum-memphis.com o en la taquilla del teatro.

Under the direction of the two-time Tony Award® winner, Jerry Mitchell (“Kinky Boots”), with choreography by Sergio Trujillo (“Jersey Boys”), a four-time Drama Desk nominee, and with an original book by Academy Award® winner Alexander Dinelaris (“Birdman”), “On Your Feet!” has been distinguished as one of the most inspiring stories of our times. It tells the story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, who, from their humble beginnings in Cuba, came to the United States and broke all barriers to become an international sensation in the world of pop music. It was also thanks to these two great artists that other Latin singers have been able to make their crossover and acquire fame in the American market.

According to the creative team of this great production, “‘On Your Feet!’ is as authentic as a Broadway musical can be. The cast is Latino. They speak Spanish as well as English. Original members of Miami Sound Machine are part of the orchestra (five of them). The choreography features real Cuban dances, not just the salsa and the conga, but the chancleta and the pañuelo.”

“When I would go into the room where Sergio and his dancers were working, it wasn’t like he had to teach them how to salsa, or teach them the rhythms,” Mitchell said. “They came in knowing the language. It was a vocabulary they all grew up with,” he added.

On behalf of the lead actors, Christie Prades (Gloria) and Eddie Noel (Emilio), “On Your Feet!” is the platform that has helped them launch their acting careers on Broadway. For both artists, it is truly an honor to play both Gloria and Emilio Estefan.

“This musical is ultimately the story of so many Cuban families, mine included, that escaped to Miami in search of freedom and the American Dream,” Prades said.

Conforming to Prades, Gloria was a “role model” for her when she was growing up. “My mom has all of her albums and played her music all the time. And she would tell me, ‘Gloria is just like us.’ Gloria was the example that you can do anything.”

The young actress from Miami auditioned for “On Your Feet!” when the show had been on Broadway for six months. Initially, she was cast as a swing as well as a cover for Ana Villafañe, who was the first one to play Gloria. On February 6, 2018, Prades appeared in some numbers from “On Your Feet!” at the Arsht Center. At the end of the show, Gloria Estefan came out onstage and asked her if she would like to lead the national tour.

“I was in complete shock,” Prades said. “It didn’t seem real. It wasn’t until I left the Broadway production and returned home to Miami that I had a chance to sit down and grasp what had happened. I’m forever grateful to Gloria and Emilio for giving me this experience. I’m so happy to share their story around the nation, and it’s an understatement when I say I feel deeply honored to portray this incredible woman.”

Eddie Noel, in turn, said in an exclusive interview with La Prensa Latina that he feels very honored to play the role of Emilio Estefan. “For me it is the greatest honor in the world. (Emilio) is a super humble man. He always greets you with a kiss and a hug, he’s very kind, he’s like a relative, like an uncle; I even call him ‘uncle Emilio,’” said the Puerto Rican actor, who from the beginning (in April 2017) auditioned for that role, but it was not until two weeks ago that he got the news from Emilio Estefan himself that he was going to lead the end of the current tour.

Noel joined the cast of “On Your Feet!” in 2018. He had to play five different characters. Six or seven months later, he was given the role of Gloria Estefan’s father.

Regarding the musical itself, Noel explains that the audience will be able to learn more about the personal and professional lives of both Cuban-American artists. The musical presents the story of Emilio and Gloria Estefan, including their childhood and the concerts. It ends with the American Music Awards of 1991, when Gloria performs again after the terrible accident she had.

For Noel, there are two numbers from the show that are his favorite ones: “Mi Tierra” and “Wrapped.” In the role of Gloria Fajardo, Gloria Estefan’s mother, Nancy Ticotin sings “Mi Tierra,” a song that goes back to Cuba in the fifties. In “Wrapped,” Gloria dreams of her father, her grandmother, and other relatives who are dead while she is undergoing surgery. “It’s a very emotional number, because the good thing about this show is that it’s not only for the Latino community but also appeals to everyone. It is about family, and we all have families.”

In conclusion, it is a musical for all generations, races and cultures, as it speaks of family, love, equal opportunities, the American dream, and personal improvement.

“We’re all immigrants and we’re all part of this wonderful country, which is made up of people of all colors and races. That is On Your Feet!,” Sergio Trujillo stated.

“On Your Feet!” will be at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis from February 12 to February 17. Tickets are $25-$125, and are on sale at www.orpheum-memphis.com or at the theatre’s box office.
