Casaluz Gets a $50,000 Grant to Continue Offering Its Services to the Hispanic Community of Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — CasaLuz recently received a $50,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis.
“We are super excited. This grant is giving us the push we need to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and the incalculable damage that it has and continues to inflict on our people, in addition to the increase in the incidence of domestic violence and other violent crimes,” said Inés Negrette, founder and CEO of CasaLuz, the first and only nonprofit organization in Memphis that helps Hispanic victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes in their own language. “A big thank you to the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis for their support to our hard, and dedicated work to continue assisting Hispanic/Latinx victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other violent crimes.”
The Mid-South COVID-19 Regional Response Fund is one of the many programs that Community Foundation of Greater Memphis has. This particular program provides flexible funding to organizations serving people impacted by novel coronavirus and the economic consequences of the pandemic in West Tennessee, eastern Arkansas, and northern Mississippi. To date, the fund has deployed $4.9 million to 138 distinct organizations for relief, recovery, and resiliency efforts.
“A lot of these small agencies, particularly grassroots agencies like CasaLuz, serve clients that other agencies never see. So, obviously the client base for CasaLuz is very specific, it’s primarily women, but obviously LatinX, primarily women, who are suffering from domestic violence and domestic assault,” said Bob Fockler, president of Community Foundation of Greater Memphis.
Community Foundation of Greater Memphis is part of Mayor Jim Strickland’s regional response fund, and it is focused on smaller organizations that help people that often live in the shadows. It also administers grants in partnership with the City of Memphis, Shelby County Government, United Way of the Mid-South, and Momentum Nonprofit Partners/Mid-South Philanthropy Network.
“Our workload has gone up so dramatically since COVID because domestic violence is on the rise. We have so much more work to do that this gives us the kind of the resiliency to not have to worry so much about where our next dollar is going to come from,” said Cindy Shainberg, Board Chair at CasaLuz, in an interview with La Prensa Latina.
The mission of CasaLuz is to prevent and reduce domestic violence and related crimes in the Spanish-speaking community and to promote equal access to justice and other services.
According to Negrette, CasaLuz has reported in recent months an increase of approximately 25% in new cases of domestic violence in the Hispanic community. Since its inauguration in May 2016, CasaLuz has assisted more than 960 new clients, not including the thousands of cases that have already been established and the thousands of services that have been provided so far. Since the pandemic started, CasaLuz has assisted more than new 250 clients. “And we continue to expand our services so we can better guide our community towards a path free of violence and fear, promoting healing and positively impacting the future of our city,” Negrette added.

Desde que comenzó la pandemia del coronavirus, CasaLuz ha atendido a más de 250 clientes nuevos. “Y seguimos ampliando nuestros servicios en nuestro compromiso de seguir guiando a nuestra comunidad hacia un camino libre de violencia y miedo, promoviendo la sanación e impactando positivamente el futuro de nuestra ciudad”, aseveró Negrette.
