All Quiet On The Western Front leads BAFTA nominations with 14

London, Jan 19 (EFE).- World War I epic All Quiet On The Western Front was nominated for 14 BAFTA awards on Thursday, including best director, supporting actor, adapted screenplay as well as best film and best non-English language film.

The Netflix production, a screen adaptation of a novel from 1929, ties the record for nominations for a foreign language film, set in 2000 by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

The German film leads the way ahead of The Banshees Of Inisherin and sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All At Once, which bagged 10 nominations each. They are closely followed by Elvis, with nine nominations.

In addition to the war drama, BAFTA nominees for best movie include The Banshees Of Inisherin, Elvis, Everything Everywhere All At Once, and Tár.

In the race for best director is Edward Berger for All Quiet On the Western Front, Martin McDonagh for The Banshees Of Inisherin, Park Chan-Wook for Decision To Leave, Daniel Kwan for Everything Everywhere All At Once, Todd Field for Tár and Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King.

Vying for best actress are Australia’s Cate Blanchett (Tár), American Viola Davis (The Woman King), Danielle Deadwyler (Till), Spain’s Ana De Armas (Blonde), English star Emma Thompson (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande) and Malaysian Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere).

Austin Butler, who has been acclaimed for his role in the Elvis biopic, is on the list of nominees for best actor alongside Colin Farrell (The Banshees Of Inisherin), Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Daryl McCormack (Good Luck to You, Leo Grande), Paul Mescal (Aftersun) and Bill Nighy for his role in Living.

After the announcement, Anna Higgs, chair of the BAFTA Film committee said it was “heartening to see that BAFTA’s ongoing work to level the playing field continues to have a positive impact on the diversity.”

Higgs added that she was “delighted to see an all-women list,” running for the outstanding debut award, and “so many first-time nominees across the board.”

The awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Festival Hall on February 19.EFE
