Ukraine advances on southern front, Russia concentrates forces in northeast

Kyiv/Moscow, Aug 31 (EFE).- Ukrainian forces continued their advance on the southern front on Thursday, where Russian troops are trying to stop them.

Meanwhile, on the northeastern front, on the Kupiansk-Liman axis, Moscow’s army has amassed up to 110,000 men to gain the upper hand.

Ukrainian troops are trying to consolidate their position in the southeastern region of Zaporizhzhia after the liberation of the village of Robotine advancing towards neighboring town of Verbove, said Ukrainian military spokesman Oleksandr Shtupun.

“The operations in the Tavria area seem to have decreased in intensity, but the enemy is still trying to counterattack,” said the serviceman on Ukrainian television, who used the historical term to designate for southeastern Ukraine.

UKRAINE TRYING TO WIDEN THE GAP IN RUSSIAN DEFENSE

The aim of the advance in the Verbove area is to expand the breach zone of the Russian defensive lines in order to prevent the encirclement of the Ukrainian troops in their advance southwards, where their next objective is the town of Tokmak, a vital communications hub.

The liberation of Tokmak is crucial to Ukraine’s aims of cutting off the Russian Army’s land corridor linking mainland Russia with the Crimean Peninsula and areas it controls in Zaporizhzhya and Kherson to the Sea of Azov.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Lieutenant General Igor Konashenkov confirmed the Ukrainian offensive in the Verbove area today, saying that Russian troops had repelled five attacks by the Ukrainian 82nd Airborne Brigade.

RUSSIAN TROOPS IN THE NORTHWEST IN THE LEAD

Ukrainian army spokesman Ilia Yevlash confirmed that on the northeastern front in Kupiansk, Russian troops are using large amounts of ammunition on a daily basis, in addition to their full artillery and air resources.

On the Kupiansk-Liman axis, the military officer said, the Russians continue to deploy troops, concentrating 110,000 men to break through Ukrainian defenses.

DRONES, A THREAT TO THE RUSSIAN REARGUARD

Ukraine is not limiting its attacks to Russian forces on its territory, but is using drones to attack Russia’s deep rear, including Moscow.

Since the beginning of the military campaign in Ukraine on February 24, 2023, Russian authorities have reported 511 drone attacks and sightings, according to RBC digital Ukrainian President Volodymir Zelensky today in a message on Telegram celebrated that long-range weapons produced by the country’s domestic industry can reach targets hundreds of kilometers away.

“About own production. Successfully used our new long-range armament: destruction of the target at 700 kilometers!” Zelenski wrote.

The president was alluding to Wednesday’s drone attack, claimed by Ukrainian military intelligence, on an airfield in Russia’s Pskov region, some 700 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, in which four Il-76 military transport planes were allegedly destroyed.

Ukraine’s production of long-range weapons is crucial for Ukraine, as the military aid it receives from its Western partners is conditional on it not being used against Russian territory.

The secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Oleksy Danilov, released a video of a Ukrainian missile launch today, announcing that they had successfully tested new missiles.
