Kim Jong-un met Chinese delegation visiting Pyongyang for war anniversary

Seoul, Jul 29 (EFE).- North Korean leader Kim Jong-un held a meeting with the Chinese delegation led by Li Hongzhong that traveled to Pyongyang to participate in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of the Korean War (1950-1953).

Kim held talks with the delegation in “a warm atmosphere” and took a souvenir photo with them, state news agency KCNA reported Saturday.

During the meeting Kim and Li, a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China (CPC), spoke of strengthening cooperation between their countries in the face of the “complicated international situation.”

The leader of the North Korean regime conveyed to Li his gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for sending the delegation.

Kim also expressed his gratitude to China for its help during the civil war (Korean War), a support he said his country will never forget.

Kim then held a reception for the Chinese delegation with prominent figures from the regime and in which both Li and the sister of North Korean leader Kim Yo-jong made speeches, according to the KCNA report.

The Chinese government delegation arrived in Pyongyang on Wednesday to attend the war anniversary celebrations, which included a large military parade where the North Korean regime displayed its arsenal.

The commemorative event was also attended by a delegation from the Russian government, led by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, who was also received by Kim during his stay.

Pyongyang marks the anniversary of the signing of the ceasefire that ended the Korean War on July 27, 1953, as “Victory Day,” as the regime’s narrative claims that the United States and its allies were forced to plead for an armistice.

North Korean authorities used the anniversary to show their proximity to Moscow and Beijing, whose visit indicates that the strict border policy activated by Pyongyang to prevent the entry of Covid-19 at the beginning of 2020 could soon be modified. EFE
