New York City, US, Sep 4 (EFE).- Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz charged into the final 16 of the US Open on Saturday, while Petra Kvitova knocked out Garbiñe Muguruza.

After coming back from a set down in both the first and second rounds at Flushing Meadows, Nadal thumped Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-0, 6-1 and 7-5 in two hours and 17 minutes.

The Spaniard has defeated Gasquet in every one of the 18 games they have played and has won 34 consecutive sets.

In the 4th round he will face American Frances Tiafoe, who beat Argentinian Diego Schwartzman 7-6(7), 6-4, 6-4 in three hours and two minutes.

With spectacular form and great self-confidence, compatriot Alcara beat American Jenson Brooksby with a triple 6-3 in two hours and 11 minutes.

In his three matches so far, Alcaraz has yet to lose a set and in the 4th round he will face Croatian Marin Čilić who knocked out Britain’s Dan Evans.

Alcaraz’s win was his 47th of the season, making him currently the player with the most victories this year.

On a sad note for the Spanish delegation, Garbiñe Muguruza had a superb match against Czech player Kvitova, but was ultimately defeated in a final-set tie-break 5-7, 6-3 and 7-6(10).

The sixth day of the US Open was characterized by victories of the favorites.

Poland’s WTA No. 1 Iga Świątek beat American Lauren Davis; Belarus’ Victória Azárenka knocked out Croatian Petra Martić; Martić’s compatriot Karolína Plíšková beat Swiss Belinda Bencic; Britain’s Cameron Norrie defeated the Danish Holger Rune; Italy’s Jannick Sinner knocked out American Brandon Nakashima, and Russia’s Andrey Rublev beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov in a match spanning five sets and more than four hours.
