Koeman: Barça not in a position to win lots of things

Barcelona, Jan 30 (efe-epa).- Ronald Koeman on Saturday acknowledged that Barcelona was not in a position to win “lots of things” at the moment.

The Barça head coach was speaking at a press conference a day ahead of the club’s league match against Athletic Bilbao. The Catalan side is sat in third place, 10 points behind league leaguers Atlético Madrid, who have a game in hand.

“We have to be realistic and know where we are coming from, the changes that we have made and the young players we have,” the Dutch coach said.

“The league is complicated by the points difference with Atlético Madrid, and in the Champions League there is no clear favorite.”

A report from the club’s technical secretary, circulated by Catalan broadcaster TV3, which named Manchester City midfielder Eric Garcia as a signing target and seemed to call into question the ability of Samuel Umtiti and Óscar Mingueza to play at a high level, was bound to come up at the presser.

Koeman said he paid little notice to the news and said it was “also important to have someone at the club looking to improve the squad.”

He acknowledged, however, that he spoke to Man. City manager Pep Guardiola on the phone to wish him a happy 50th birthday.

“Not to talk about Eric Garcia,” he added. EFE-EPA
