Liverpool crushes Wolves 4-0, Perez is key in Leicester win over Sheffield

London, Dec 6 (efe-epa).- Liverpool crushed the Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 on Sunday, with the Reds welcoming some 2,000 fans to the Anfield stadium for the first time since the Champions League playoff match against Atletico de Madrid.

Goals by Mohamed Salah, Georginio Wijnaldum, Joel Matip and Wolverhampton’s Nelson Semedo – the latter an own goal – told the story of the day for Jurgen Klopp’s squad against a nevertheless competitive opponent.

Salah got Liverpool on the board in the 24th minute on a serious error by Conor Coady, who tried to control the ball with his chest in his own area, but wound up gifting it to Salah, who spiked it home for the first tally.

The visitors went on the hunt for the tying tally but Wijnaldum put a stop to that in the 58th minute when he got a shot into the net from outside the area.

Then, Matip scored and finally Semedo knocked one into his own net.

Caoimhin Kelleher, who came in as Liverpool netminder for the injured Alisson Becker, kept the net secure against the Wolverhampton tries.

Liverpool now has 24 points, even with Tottenham in the No. 1 spot on the Premier League table, but it’s behind Jose Mourinho’s boys on goal differential.

The Wolves, on the other hand, could not cheer up Raul Jimenez, who was just released from the hospital and is recovering at home, down in 10th place with 17 points.

Meanwhile, Spain’s Ayoze Perez scored Leicester City’s first goal in the team’s 2-1 road win against Premier League basement dweller Sheffield United on Sunday.

The Foxes took home three ranking points from the confrontation at Bramall Lane thanks to a second tally by Jamie Vardy.

Earlier, Ayoze had gotten the team on the board with a good volley after a shot had been deflected inside the area, but Sheffield ties things up quickly on a corner kick with a header by Oliver McBurnie and the Blades were able to hang on, going for at least a draw, until the final moments of the match.

However, Vardy took a long pass in the 89th minute and broke through the defense to face off against goaltender Aaron Ramsdale, knocking it into the twine for the ninth goal of his Premier League career and the last-minute win.

The Foxes dominated the match throughout against a struggling opponent, taking nine of the 10 shots fired in the first half.

The result left Sheffield coach Chris Wilder down in the dumps given that his team has only notched one ranking point in the past 11 weeks of play and the boys have scored just five goals all this season.

Nevertheless, and despite the disheartening loss, Sheffield’s netminder Ramsdale had a number of noteworthy saves.

With the win, its first in the past four five matches, Leicester is in third place on the table with 21 points, one behind leader Chelsea and tied with Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, both of which it still has to play.

Sheffield, on the other hand, is six points under the relegation threshold and things are not looking good.
