Kovacic, Pulisic rescue Chelsea in 2-2 draw against Liverpool

Sports Desk, Jan 2 (EFE).- Chelsea on Sunday rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to rescue a point against Liverpool in a Premier League match that saw four goals scored in the first half.

It was Sadio Mane who broke the scoreless deadlock nine minutes into the game when he took advantage of a loose clearance by Chelsea’s defense, dribbled around goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and fired home.

Having squandered a couple of close chances, Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 26th minute as he made the most of a through from Trent Alexander-Arnold to beat Mendy.

The Blues, however, got back in the game over the final stretch of the first period, with Mateo Kovacic firing home a first-touch volley on the verge of the area in the 42nd minute.

Christian Pulisic completed the comeback on a close-range shot off a pass from N’Golo Kante one minute into first-half stoppage time.

With the draw, Chelsea are second in the Premier League table with 43 points, 10 behind leader Manchester City.

Liverpool – who had to do without Alisson Becker, Robert Firmino and Joel Matip as they tested positive for the coronavirus – are third, one point behind the Blues.
