Kyiv orchestra holds concert as city bolsters defenses

Kyiv, Mar 9 (EFE).- A Ukrainian orchestra staged a concert in Kyiv’s central Independence Square in a symbolic call for a no-fly zone over the country on Wednesday as the city bolstered its defenses with metal anti-tank hedgehogs and barricades.

The Kyiv Classic Orchestra, directed by renowned conductor Herman Makarenko, performed renditions of Ukrainian compositions as well as international pieces such as Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, the European Union’s anthem.

Makarenko holds the title of Unesco artist for peace.

Independence or ‘Maidan’ Square in central Kyiv became the symbolic heart of the country’s 2014 pro-European revolution.

Kyiv has repeatedly called on Nato to enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country two weeks ago.

Nato has so far resisted the measure, fearing it would bring the alliance into direct military conflict with Russia. EFE
