China calls for ‘peaceful’ resolution to war in Ukraine

Beijing, Sep 21 (EFE).- China has called for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the war in Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the partial mobilization of reserve troops, the foreign ministry said Wednesday.

“Every country’s reasonable security concerns should be valued, and all efforts conducive to resolving the crisis peacefully should be supported,” foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters at a press briefing in response to Putin’s deployment of military reservists for the war in Ukraine.

“China calls for dialogue and consultation to resolve the divergences,” Wang added.

The spokesman said that China’s stance regarding the ongoing war remained unchanged.

He said Beijing continued to support the view that the “sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries should be respected and that the United Nations Charter and principles should be followed.”

The Chinese official also alluded to the “legitimate concerns of all countries,” in a nod to Moscow, a long-time Beijing ally.

China has repeatedly declared its opposition to the economic sanctions that have been issued against Russia, alleging that the measures were not backed by international law and failed to offer solutions.

Putin and president Xi Jinping met last week in the Uzbek city of Samarkand on the eve of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) security summit where the two nations endorsed their “friendship.”

At the meeting, Putin welcomed “the balanced position of our Chinese friends in connection with the Ukrainian crisis.”

“We understand your questions and concerns about this,” the Russian leader added.

Xi also assured Putin that China was willing to work with Russia “to play a leading role in demonstrating the responsibility of major powers, and to instill stability and positive energy into a world in turmoil.”EFE
