MEMPHIS, TN (LPL/WMC) — La ciudad de Memphis rindió homenaje al homónimo de Tom Lee Park, 94 años después de sus actos heroicos.
Tom Lee era un trabajador del río hace 94 años. A pesar de no poder nadar, rescató a docenas del barco de vapor volcado M.E. Normal.
Lee usó un pequeño bote de madera para hacer varios viajes de ida y vuelta a la orilla.
Sus descendientes asistieron a la proclamación en Beale Street Landing el miércoles.
“Es un evento importante para Memphis y es un evento importante para nuestra familia”, dijo uno de los descendientes de Tom Lee, Terry Watts. “Ahora entendemos las vidas que impactó solo al pasar esa tarde y salvar a las personas. MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) — The City of Memphis paid tribute to the namesake behind Tom Lee Park, 94 years after his heroics.
Tom Lee was a river worker 94 years ago. Despite not being able to swim, he rescued dozens from the capsized steamship M.E. Normal.
Lee used a small wooden skiff to make several trips back and forth to the shore.
His great-great niece and nephew attended the proclamation at Beale Street Landing on Wednesday.
“It’s an important event for Memphis and it’s an important event for our family,” Tom Lee’s great-great nephew Terry Watts said. “We now understand the lives he impacted just by passing by that afternoon and saving individuals. A lot of chapters would have closed, so it’s a meaningful thing and then to be tied to that? It’s an honor.”
Many call the act a unifying moment with an African-American man rescuing 32 Caucasians.
