Ex-New York police officer convicted of Jan.6 Capitol breach
Washington, Mar 10 (EFE).- A former New York police officer has been sentenced for her role in the assault on the Capitol on Jan.6, 2021, officials said.
A federal judge found Sara Carpenter, 53, guilty on eight counts, including civil disorder and obstruction of an official proceeding, “both felonies,” a justice department statement said.
“Her actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the US Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the presidential election,” said the department.
The statement said that Carpenter was captured on CCTV in the Capitol Rotunda and elsewhere as she “confronted a line of police officers inside the Capitol, shook her tambourine and screamed ‘I’m a f**** animal,’
She pushed up against the officers guarding a hallway to the Senate chamber.
Carpenter slapped the arms of law enforcement officers, who were trying to hold her back from further intruding into the Capitol, according to the government’s evidence.
As she exited the Capitol, Carpenter said, “The breach was made. It needs to calm down now. Congress needs to come out. They need to certify Trump as president. This is our house.”
Carpenter was arrested on Mar.23, 2021, in Jamaica, New York.
In the 26 months since the Jan.6 assault, nearly 1,000 people have been arrested for crimes related to the breach of the US Capitol.
More than 320 suspects have been charged with assaulting or impeding law enforcement. The investigation remains ongoing.
