Madrid, May 12 (EFE).- Atletico Madrid defeated Real Sociedad 2-1 Wednesday to move a step closer to claiming their second LaLiga title in eight years.
The Colchoneros improved to 80 points, 4 ahead of second-place Barcelona and 5 points better than defending champions Real Madrid.
If all three teams win their remaining matches, Atleti will hoist the trophy, while Barça and the Blancos may have to start looking over the shoulders at Sevilla, who are on 74 points after beating Valencia 1-0 earlier Wednesday.
Sociedad, for their part, are looking less than secure in fifth place with a lead of just 2 points over Real Betis, who have a game in hand.
Diego Simeone’s men began the contest with some of their best, most energetic football of the season, pressing relentlessly.
Luis Suarez should have put the hosts ahead in the 5th minute, but he sent his shot over the cross-bar four minutes before Marcos Llorente forced a shaky stop from Sociedad goalkeeper Alex Remiro.
The inevitable Atleti goal materialized in the 16th minute courtesy of Yannick Carrasco with an assist from Llorente.
Though the visitors grew steadier as the game went on, Angel Correa made it 2-0 in the 28th minute on a play engineered by Suarez.
Sociedad stirred into action with Alexander Isak in the vanguard, but Atleti keeper Jan Oblak denied the Swede twice in the space of four minutes.
Suarez fluffed an opportunity to extend the advantage early in the second half, delivering a weak strike that posed no problem for Remiro.
Oblak thwarted Portu in the 67th minute and dealt easily with Jon Bautista’s effort off the subsequent corner.
Suarez sent a shot just wide on another chance to nail down the victory in the 77th, a miss that loomed even larger when Igor Zubeldia pulled back a goal for the visitors in the 83rd minute.
The Colchoneros managed to see out the match and maintain their edge over Barça and Real Madrid. EFE
