First Anniversary of Dissapearance of Summer Wells

HAWKINS COUNTY, TN (WVLT) — The disappearance of Summer Wells, the 6-year-old Hawkins County girl at the center of a Tennessee AMBER Alert, has captured the attention of thousands across the region.

Her parents believe Summer was abducted from their property.

Today, June 15, 2022, marked one year since the Hawkins County girl went missing. At midnight, her father, Donald Wells, released a statement from jail, where he is being held for violation of probation involving a DUI charge.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation officials held a press event at 11 a.m. to mark the anniversary.

TBI representative Leslie Earhart took the stand at the media briefing, summarizing what investigators had done so far. “This investigation weighs heavily on us all, and I promise that no one wants answers more than we do,” Earhart said.

Earhart also cautioned against misinformation and scams on social media, asking people to not submit tips based on YouTube videos or theories.

Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson also spoke at the event, saying no other case at the office had ever lasted one year and involved so many man hours. “Please know that we have never stopped,” Lawson said.

Lawson also addressed the Hawkins County community as a whole, saying “the support from this county and surrounding community is outstanding.” Specifically, he thanked those that helped support searches by doing things like bringing food for volunteers.

At the event, TBI officials addressed several frequently asked questions about the case. Officials said that Summer’s AMBER Alert is still active, and her case is not considered a cold case. Officials also reviewed steps they’ve taken in the search, saying that they had interviewed Wells family members, neighbors and even registered sex offenders in the area.

Hoy, 15 de junio de 2022 marcó un año desde que desapareció la niña del condado de Hawkins. A la medianoche, su padre, Donald Wells, emitió un comunicado desde la cárcel, donde está detenido por violación de la libertad condicional por un cargo de DUI.

Funcionarios de la Oficina de Investigaciones de Tennessee realizaron un evento de prensa a las 11 a. m. para conmemorar el aniversario.

Los funcionarios también revisaron los pasos que tomaron en la búsqueda y dijeron que entrevistaron a miembros de la familia Wells, vecinos e incluso delincuentes sexuales registrados en el área.
