Joan Laporta elected as new Barcelona president

Madrid Desk, Mar 8 (efe-epa).- Catalan lawyer and former F.C.Barcelona president Joan Laporta won the club’s elections on Sunday with more than 50 per cent of the vote, becoming the 42nd Barcelona’s president in history.

Laporta came out on top against his rivals Victor Font and Toni Freixa after receiving 54.28 per cent of the votes. The ex-president now returns to the position that he held between 2003 and 2010. His term will last until 2026.

Barcelona elections were held at a difficult time for the club, only six days after four officials were arrested for alleged corruption after a police raid on its offices.

Laporta will have to face the challenges of navigating the major debt crisis in European soccer as well as preventing Barça star Lionel Messi to leave the club. EFE-EPA
