Ricciardo to leave McLaren at the end of the season

Sports Desk, Aug 24 (EFE).- Australian Formula One driver Daniel Ricciardo is set to leave McLaren at the end of the 2022 season.

The McLaren F1 team said in a statement that it had come to a mutual agreement to part ways with Ricciardo, who joined in 2021 to race alongside Lando Norris.

In a video statement posted to social media, Ricciardo said the union had not worked “the way we wanted.”

He added: “We had a lot of discussions but in the end we mutually agreed that it was the right thing for both of us.”

The Australian, a big character on the F1 circuit, described the move as “bittersweet.”

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, said: “Daniel has been a great addition to McLaren, and it’s been a pleasure working with him.

“It’s no secret that we hoped we could achieve more together but seeing him stand on the top step of the podium as a McLaren driver was a highlight.”

Ricciardo delivered McLaren’s win since 2012 at Monza last year, but has otherwise failed to match expectations with the team.

Ricciardo joined McLaren from Renault (now Alpine) and previously raced for Red Bull.

He has eight Grand Prix wins under his belt but sits far behind his teammate Norris this season in the overall rankings. EFE
