Taliban to hold talks with US, EU in Doha

Kabul, Nov 24 (EFE).- A delegation of the Taliban government is set to hold talks with representatives from the United States and European Union in Doha from Nov.27-29, according to the Afghan foreign ministry Wednesday.

The Afghan delegation will be led by acting foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and have officials from the education, health, finance and security departments, as well as the central bank.

The topics that will be discussed include “political issues, frozen assets, humanitarian aid, education, health, security, reopening of embassies in Kabul, and other relevant issues,” said the ministry.

The preparatory meetings for these talks in Doha were already in place between the Taliban and the US on three major topics – the implementation of last year’s Doha agreement, unfreezing Afghan funds to revive the economy, and better political and diplomatic relations, Taliban’s deputy spokesperson Enamullah Samangani told EFE.

Amid the economic and social instability, several Afghan politicians and analysts hold the international community responsible for the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan.

The Taliban took control of Afghanistan in the middle of August as the US prepared to pullout of the country in line with the Doha agreement signed with the Taliban in February last year.

The country was consequently plunged into a severe social economic crisis, with the country’s foreign funds being frozen and thousands of people seeking to leave the country to escape the Taliban rule.

“Whether they unfreeze the funds or not, they have been putting Afghan people in serious crises, they are responsible for the problems and they have to find an effective solution,” former parliamentarian and political analyst Gulalai Akbari told EFE.
