At least 5 dead in fire at shoe factory in Bangladesh
Dhaka, Nov 5 (EFE) – At least five people died after a fire broke out in a shoe factory in the Bangladeshi capital of Dhaka early Friday, according to fire service officials.
The incident occurred around 1.15 am at Rafiq Shoe Factory at Swarighat area of Old Dhaka and the casualties were all workers at the site, fire service duty officer Rashed bin Khaled told EFE.
“They all died from suffocation. Our eight units brought the fire under control in around two hours,” Khaled said, adding that no one was injured in the accident.
The cause of the fire could not be ascertained yet, according to the fire department official.
Dhaka’s historic old city is home to many industries, where security norms are not strictly implemented, often leading to serious accidents.
On Feb.20, 2019, a massive fire at a chemical products warehouse in the same area killed at least 70 people and injured 55 others, with seven buildings being completely destroyed in the incident.
In 2010, another fire at a chemical products factory in the same neighborhood killed at least 124 people.
Old Dhaka is one of the world’s most densely populated areas, with a population density of more than 23,000 people per square kilometer. EFE
