Sports Desk, Mar 20 (efe-epa).- Robert Lewandowski posted a perfect hat trick – a goal with his head and one apiece with each foot – on Saturday to power Bayern Munich 4-0 over Stuttgart and give the perennial Bundesliga champions a 4-point cushion over RB Leipzig.
Hosting seventh-place Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena, Bayern were without Joshua Kimmich, sidelined by a cold, and went down to 10 men in the 11th minute with the expulsion of Alphonso Davis for a reckless challenge against Wataru Endo.
The visitors came close to capitalizing on the break in the 14th minute, but Sasa Kalajdzic sent his header into the mid-section of goalkeeper Manuel Neuer after meeting a cross into the box from Borna Suso.
Three minutes later, Lewandowski scored from close range with an assist from Gnabry, who went on to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute, converting a Leroy Sane pass.
The 3-0 materialized in the 23rd with Lewandowski’s header off Thomas Müller’s cross.
With six minutes left in first-half regulation, the Polish international completed the triple, exploiting Gonzalo Castro’s botched attempt to block a ball into the area from Sane.
While Stuttgart tried to respond in the second half, they managed to create just one chance, a header from Kalajdzic in the 56th minute that forced a solid stop by Neuer.
Lewandowski fired over the cross-bar just past the hour mark and three of his teammates, Sane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Leon Goretzka went on to do the same before the final whistle put Stuttgart out of their misery.
With Saturday’s hat trick, Lewandowski has scored 40 or more goals in six consecutive seasons. EFE rz/dr
