Lewis Hamilton plans name change to include mother’ surname

Sports Desk, Mar 14 (EFE).- Seven-time Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton on Monday said he was planning to officially change his name to include his mother’s surname Larbalestier.

The Mercedes driver made the announcement during a question and answer session at the Expo 2020 Dubai as the world of F1 gears up for the opening Grand Prix of the 2022 calendar in Bahrain this weekend.

“None of you might know that my mum’s name is Larbalestier, and I am just about to put that in my name,” the British driver said.

“I don’t really fully understand the whole idea when people get married – the woman loses her name, and my mum, I really want her name to continue on with the Hamilton name,” he added.

Hamilton’s mother Carmen and his father Anthony separated when he was two.

On the topic of the upcoming season, Hamilton acknowledged that Mercedes has experienced some issues in pre-season testing while bitter rivals Red Bull, led by Max Verstappen, looked “ridiculously fast at the moment.”

“But we are the best team,” he added, according to F1 media.

Hamilton missed out on a record-breaking eighth world championship in the last lap of the last race of 2021 after a controversial and dramatic restart saw Verstappen clinch victory in Abu Dhabi. EFE
