German exhibition takes trans-Atlantic dive into post war art movements

Potsdam, Germany, Jun 4 (EFE).- A new exhibition at the Barberini Museum in Potsdam from Saturday invites visitors to explore the American abstract expressionism and European informalism that emerged after World War II.

The Shape of Freedom. International Abstraction after 1945 brings together 90 works by artists such as K. O. Götz, Lee Krasner, Georges Mathieu, Joan Mitchell, Ernst Wilhelm Nay, Barnett Newman, Jackson Pollock, Judit Reigl and Mark Rothko.

In the wake of World War II, painting styles embarked on a vastly different direction compared to the interwar period as artists pushed the boundaries of color, shape and form.

In the United States, well-known artists such as Pollock and Rothko made their name in the movement while the likes of Mathieu and Antoni Tàpies did so in the European sphere.

The exhibition, which opened Saturday, explores the links between the two movements. EFE
