Iran’s top negotiator: New nuclear deal closer than ever

Tehran, Jun 20 (EFE).- The ongoing Vienna talks aimed at reviving the 2015 Iran nuclear deal are “closer than ever” to reaching an agreement, the Islamic Republic’s top negotiator Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday.

“Today is the last day of the sixth round of negotiations. They have been through very intensive days and very difficult work,” said Araghchi, who is also the deputy exterior minister.

“Now they are in a position where they think all the documents of the agreement are almost ready,” he told the state-run Iranian TV.

Iran and the other 2015 nuclear deal’s signatories (Germany, China, France, the United Kingdom and Russia) hold in Vienna their first plenary session after hardliner Ebrahim Raisi was elected as Iran’s president.

The negotiations began in April to convince the United States, which has been indirectly participating in the talks, to return to the deal Washington abandoned in 2018.

They also aim to make Iran respect its terms, after it failed to comply with the nuclear deal in 2019 as it enriched uranium at around 60% purity. EFE
