London’s National Gallery to host exhibit on Raphael

London, Apr 6 (EFE).- London’s National Gallery is set to host an exhibit on Italian artist Raphael (1483-1520), a multimedia artist for his era, director Gabriele Finaldi said Wednesday.

The exhibit, which will run between 9 April and 31 July, is the first outside of Italy to explore the Renaissance giant’s career in honor of the 500th anniversary since his death at age 37.

In just two decades, Raffaello Santi, one of the main artistic references in Western Europe, worked in various formats and touched on multiple themes; the human, the divine, friendship, power and beauty.

It comprises over 90 works arranged chronologically, including oil paintings such as Santa Cecilia, charcoal drawings for his altarpiece of Nicholas of Tolentino, engravings as well as architectural designs for Rome.

Today, we would call Raphael a multimedia artist, the gallery director said, adding that being a painter of the papal court allowed him to diversify his artistic activities. EFE
