Lukaku, De Bruyne, Hazard to lead favorites Belgium at Euro 2020

Brussels, May 17 (EFE).- Belgian national team coach Roberto Martinez on Monday included captain Eden Hazard in his provisional 26-man squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 championships, despite an injury-marred season for the Real Madrid player.

The roster for the world’s highest ranked team also features Hazard’s club teammate goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, Atletico Madrid’s Yannick Carrasco, Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukaku and Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne.

Martinez said that the Real Madrid forward was in good shape and he hoped would be able to rediscover his best form in next month’s tournament.

This season, Hazard has played just 21 matches across all competitions due to repeated injuries.

Belgium, which have been drawn in Group B alongside Russia, Finland and Denmark, will kick off their campaign at Copenhagen’s Parken Stadium against Russia.

The Danish capital is one of 12 cities that will host the competition which will get underway between 11 June and 11 July.

The Red Devils are scheduled to play two warm-up friendlies against Greece and Croatia on 3 and 6 June at Brussels’ King Baudouin Stadium.

The Belgian team will begin their camp on 31 May, with de Bruyne joining them a week later after playing for Man City in the Champions League final against Chelsea on 29 May.

Belgium, which came third at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, are heavily tipped to win the tournament that has been postponed by one year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The final roster is to be announced by 1 June.
