Lukaku gets a brace as Belgium dominate Russia 3-0

Saint Petersburg, Russia, Jun 12 (EFE).- Romelu Lukaku scored twice to lead Belgium 3-0 over Russia here Saturday in the Euro 2020 opener for both teams.

The Red Devils are top of Group B by virtue of a better goal difference than Finland, who upset Denmark 1-0 in a match that was suspended for nearly two hours after Danish star Christian Eriksen collapsed with a few minutes left in the first half.

By the time play resumed, Eriksen was reported to be awake and in stable condition at a Copenhagen hospital.

The shock waves from the incident extended all the way to Saint Petersburg, as several members of the Belgian squad, including Lukaku, have played alongside Eriksen at various clubs.

After scoring in the 10th minute, Lukaku ran up to a television camera on the sideline, put his hands on either side of the lens and said, “Chris, Chris, I love you,” dedicating the goal to his friend and Inter Milan teammate.

Leandro Dendoncker fired over the cross-bar and Russian goalkeeper Anton Shunin saved a shot from Thorgan Hazard before conceding to Thomas Meunier in the 34th minute.

Russia were better after the break, forcing Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois into action on several occasions.

Eden Hazard came on for Belgium in the 72nd minute and created chances, but the game looked set to end 2-0 until Lukaku got his second on a breakaway with two minutes left in regulation. EFE io/dr
