At least 7 dead after migrant boat capsizes off Italy’s Lampedusa

Rome, Jun 30 (EFE).- At least seven people died and nine others are missing after a boat crammed with migrants sank off the coast of the Italian island of Lampedusa, local media reported on Wednesday.

Rescuers managed to find 46 survivors, who, along with the victims’ bodies, were transferred to the island by Italian patrol boats.

Local media said an additional 256 migrants reached the island overnight. They had travelled on four boats, of which just one managed to make it to the port on its own.

More than 19,000 people have arrived in Italy so far this year, while some 700 people have died or went missing in boat accidents while trying to reach Europe by crossing the central Mediterranean, according to data from rescue NGOs. EFE
