Macron targeted with tomatoes during visit to Paris suburb

Paris, Apr 27 (EFE).- French president Emmanuel Macron was pelted with cherry tomatoes during a visit to a market in a Paris suburb on Wednesday.

Macron discussed political and environmental issues in front of a small crowd in Cergy-Pontoise, his first appearance since he was reelected on Sunday.

As he passed by the market, several cherry tomatoes were thrown in his direction, prompting his security team to open an umbrella to protect him and quickly escort him away.

One of his guards was heard shouting “projectile!” as the president was shielded from view.

Macron did not address the incident in later statements to the media, when members of his security service were still visibly on edge in front of a crowd that wanted to raise complaints or questions, or just greet the president.

In his remarks, Macron struck a more moderate tone ahead of the June National Assembly elections, and said he was going to “try to reconcile the French”.

In the first round of the presidential election held on April 10, some 48% of residents of Cergy-Pontoise voted for far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melanchon, while under 24% opted for the incumbent. EFE
