Sheriff del Condado de Shelby: “La comunidad hispana nos importa mucho”
Shelby County’s Sheriff: “We Care for the Hispanic Community”

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — En un esfuerzo por generar una mayor confianza entre los residentes de la región, incluyendo a los hispanos, el sheriff del Condado de Shelby, Floyd Bonner, Jr., habló con La Prensa Latina para no sólo construir un puente con la comunidad, sino para aclarar dudas y rumores falsos sobre su departamento, especialmente en el asunto de inmigración.
“Nos importa mucho la comunidad hispana, queremos ser un buen vecino, un buen socio. Por lo mismo, asisto a eventos comunitarios todo el tiempo, porque necesitamos construir ese puente, esa relación (con la gente), y la comunidad hispana necesita saber que no estamos aquí para deportarlos; al contrario, si son víctimas de un delito, entonces deben ponerse en contacto con nosotros. Nuestros oficiales tienen instrucciones de no preguntar sobre el estatus migratorio de una persona, ya que eso es algo que no nos concierne. Nosotros estamos aquí para construir puentes en lugar de derribarlos. Queremos que todos en el condado de Shelby se sientan seguros y a salvo”, afirmó el alguacil Bonner, añadiendo a su vez que, “creo que es muy importante establecer una buena relación con todas las personas y con todos nuestros socios en la comunidad. Y si alguien en la comunidad hispana necesita que la Oficina del Sheriff se asocie con ellos en cualquier tipo de iniciativa comunitaria, estaremos más que encantados de hacerlo. Nuevamente, estamos tratando de abarcar todos los aspectos de nuestra comunidad, y los hispanos que viven en el condado de Shelby son importantes; no obstante, sabemos que aún tenemos mucho por hacer y estamos dispuestos a cumplir con ese trabajo”.
Mientras tanto, aunque la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Shelby tiene algunos oficiales hispanos, están tratando de reclutar a más. “Estamos contratando constantemente, y estamos buscando a oficiales hispanos todo el tiempo, especialmente si son mujeres”, dijo el Sheriff Bonner. “Hemos sido muy afortunados de poder reclutar a los que ya tenemos, pero todavía no es suficiente; necesitamos tener más oficiales hispanos para cubrir mejor todas las áreas del departamento”.
Por otro lado, conversando sobre cómo puede verse afectado un inmigrante indocumentado tras un arresto, el Sheriff Bonner explicó que cada vez que alguien es arrestado y encerrado en la cárcel (201 Poplar), los oficiales deben preguntar sobre su país de origen. Si la persona no nació en los Estados Unidos, entonces la Oficina del Sheriff debe notificar a ICE inmediatamente, por ley estatal. Sin embargo, no están obligados a retener a esa persona en la cárcel por más de 48 horas, si ya pagó su fianza, para que un agente de ICE puede detenerla -esto es teniendo en cuenta que depende de ICE decidir si quieren a esa persona o no.
En el caso del periodista Manuel Durán quien fue arrestado el año pasado -y aún no ha podido salir del centro de detención de inmigrantes- los agentes de ICE ya estaba en el lugar cuando éste pagó su fianza y fue puesto en libertad. “Eso fue algo muy desafortunado”, dijo el alguacil Bonner.
Con respecto a la HB2315, la Oficina del Sheriff del Condado de Shelby no está de acuerdo con dicha ley. “Nuestro Fiscal del Condado ha estado investigando sobre esta ley ya que no creemos que sea algo correcto; así que, por los momentos, no la estamos implementando aquí”.

MEMPHIS, TN (LPL) — In an effort to earn trust among residents of the region, including those who are Hispanics, Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner, Jr., spoke with La Prensa Latina to not only build a bridge with the community, but to clarify doubts and false rumors about his department, especially when it comes to immigration issues.
“We care about the Hispanic community, we want to be a good neighbor, a good partner. I go to community events all the time, because we need to build that bridge, that relationship, and the Hispanic community needs to know that we are not here trying to deport them; if they are victims of a crime, then they need to contact us and let us know. Our officers are instructed not to ask about the immigrant status of the person, we are not concerned about that. We are here to build bridges instead of tearing them down. We want everyone in Shelby County to be safe,” Sheriff Bonner stated, adding at the same time that, “I think it’s very important to reach out to all faces, all of our partners in the community. If anyone in the Hispanic community needs the Sheriff’s Office to partner with them on any kind of community initiative, we would be more than happy to do it. Again, we are trying to reach out to all aspects of our community, and Hispanics here in Shelby County are important; but we do realize that we’ve gotten some work to do and we are willing to do the work.”
In the meantime, although the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office has some Hispanic officers, they are trying to recruit more. “We are constantly hiring, and we are looking for Hispanic officers all the time, especially female officers,” said Sheriff Bonner. We’ve been very fortunate to be able to reach out and recruit the ones that we have, but there is still not enough, and we just need them in all aspects of what we do.”
On the other hand, talking about how an undocumented immigrant can be affected at the time of an arrest, Sheriff Bonner explained that whenever somebody is arrested and booked in their jail (201 Poplar), the officers are required to ask about his/her country of origin. If the person wasn’t born in the United States, then the Sheriff’s Office is required by state law to notify ICE. However, they are not obligated to hold that person so an ICE agent can detain him/her after making bond. This is keeping in mind that it’s up to ICE to decide whether they want that person or not.
In the case of journalist Manuel Durán, who was arrested last year – and is still being held in an immigrant detention center – the ICE agents were already onsite when he made bond, so they took custody of him once he was released by the Sheriff’s Office. “It was just unfortunate,” said Sheriff Bonner.
Regarding HB2315, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office does not agree with it. “We’ve had our County Attorney to look into it and we do not believe it is proper to do that, so right now we are still not holding.”

About the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is a full-service law enforcement agency, similar to MPD (Memphis Police Department). They patrol the unincorporated areas of Shelby County only, not the city. They also have SWAT Teams, Bomb Units and K-9 Units, including a Narcotics Unit that works in and out of the city and a Fugitive Division that looks for people for warrants inside the city.
