Madrid’s garment museum reopens starring Breakfast at Tiffany’s dress

Madrid, Spain, Oct 22 (EFE).- Madrid’s garment museum is set to reopen its doors with iconic pieces including the Givenchy black satin dress Audrey Hepburn wore for Breakfast at Tiffany’s and a Versace number that 90s supermodel Claudia Schiffer strutted down the catwalk.

The museum’s permanent exhibition has had a revamp ahead of its relaunch on 27 October and curators have delved into a vast archive of some 180,000 items to design a new experience for visitors that juxtaposes the old with the new.

Over 1,000 pieces will be on show including the iconic dress Hepburn wore in Blake Edward’s movie, a Versace Swarovski-encrusted gown and key prêt-à-porter designs by Yves Saint Laurent.

The permanent exhibition takes punters on a chronological journey of fashion history from the 17th-century to the present day, director of the museum Helena López de Hierro told Efe.

Curators have compared items of clothing from the past with contemporary trends in an attempt to show styles are connected.

To illustrate this, in the 19th-century exhibit black leather bullfighting shoes, known as manoletinas, are placed next to contemporary ballet flats by Manolo Blahnik, while Jeremy Scott’s flashy matador tracksuit for Adidas stands next to a traditional bullfighter’s costume.

“It is a vibrant and accessible museum that everyone can connect with because fashion is transcendental,” López de Hierro said.EFE
