Maduro wishes for Trump’s recovery, that COVID-19 makes him ‘more humane’

Caracas, Oct 4 (efe-epa).- Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro wished his United States counterpart Donald Trump a speedy recovery Sunday from COVID-19, which he contracted this week and hoped that suffering from this disease would make him “more humane.”

“We express our human solidarity” with Trump, “we want him to recover his health and life. Hopefully all this will lead him to be more reflective, more humane (…) to understand the peoples of the world,” Maduro said during a televised address.

The Venezuelan president also said the Republican “underestimated the use of the mask” and of the pandemic in general.

“We hope you recover your health (…) we hope you have a prompt and effective recovery,” he said.

The US president does not recognize the legitimacy of Maduro, whom he has called a dictator, and has reiterated that his government is open to handling various options to put an end to the so-called Bolivarian revolution, in power since 1999.

Trump, on the other hand, recognizes opposition figure Juan Guaidó as interim president of Venezuela, like the governments of 50 other countries, and has expressed his support for him on numerous occasions, such as when he received him at the White House in February.

Maduro has blamed Trump for the economic crisis that Venezuela is experiencing because, he says, this is the fault of the numerous sanctions imposed on his government by the US Executive. EFE-EPA
